The Judge Couldn’t Believe What the Defendant Said
The judge looked at the defendant.
“You are accused of stealing a bicycle.”
The man nodded.
“Yes, Your Honor.”
The courtroom became quiet.
The judge raised an eyebrow.
“You admit it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
The man sighed.
“I really needed a bicycle.”
The judge leaned forward.
“Why didn’t you buy one?”
“I had no money.”
“Why didn’t you borrow one?”
“Nobody would lend me one.”
“Why?”
The man thought for a moment.
“Probably because I keep stealing bicycles.”
The judge stared at him.
The lawyer covered his face.
The judge finally asked,
“Do you understand that you’re making this very difficult for your lawyer?”
The man nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then why do you keep talking?”
He looked at his lawyer.
“He told me honesty is important.”
The lawyer whispered,
“Not this much.”
